Left: Mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma; Right: Twisha Sharma The Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar slammed Twisha Sharma’s mother in law over the ‘character assassination’ of the deceased model and actor following her death in Bhopal. Twisha Sharma, a model and actor from Noida in Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging at her matrimonial home nearly 10 days ago. Since then, her husband Samarth Singh has remained missing. The controversy deepened after Twisha’s mother in law, Giribala Singh, a retired judge and one of the accused in the dowry death case, questioned Twisha’s personality and behaviour. She also alleged that Twisha had undergone an abortion “of her own choice" and was suffering from schizophrenia and undergoing psychiatric treatment. NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance In an interview with NDTV, Rahatkar strongly criticised the comments made against Twisha and called the incident “painful and heartbreaking". The NCW chief said the Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and sought an Action Taken Report from the authorities, as per the outlet. She said letters had already been sent to the Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh and the Chief Secretary, asking them to ensure a transparent, fair and speedy investigation. Rahatkar said it was shocking that incidents of alleged dowry harassment still continue despite growing awareness and legal safeguards for women. ‘Greater Responsibility Expected’ Twisha Sharma’s family has accused her in laws of ‘character assassination’ and also alleged lapses in the police investigation. Taking note of these allegations, Rahatkar said it was condemnable if a person who had served as a judge behaved in such a manner. She said society expects people who hold important public positions to show greater sensitivity and responsibility. If the allegations against Giribala Singh are found to be true, strict action should be taken, she added. Giribala Singh was granted interim bail on May 15 after furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000. NCW Asks Police To Examine Evidence The NCW chief assured Twisha’s family of support in their fight for justice and urged investigators not to ignore any evidence. The Commission has asked the police to examine CCTV footage, chats, call records, mobile phone data and financial transactions as part of the investigation. Rahatkar also stressed that the police must carry out the probe without any pressure or outside influence. She said respect and dignity for women must begin within families and society. Referring to similar incidents in the past, she added that holding a powerful position means little without humanity and respect for women. Family May Move High Court Twisha Sharma’s family has alleged that her in laws are trying to influence the investigation by misusing the justice system. The family’s plea seeking a second post mortem was recently rejected by a Madhya Pradesh court. They are now considering approaching the High Court for further legal action.
