The former selector did not mince his words, demanding that the franchise stop the misdirection. "Before the season started, they said he has got a leg injury and that they are hoping to have him soon," Srikkanth said in his YouTube show, a day after CSK suffered an 89-run defeat to Gujarat Titans and crashed out of the play-offs race. "Fleming also sang the same song, Ruturaj Gaikwad also sang the same: 'He might be ready for the next match'. And then before the match, CSK will have a video of Dhoni training to show the fans and hint he is fit and he might play." For Srikkanth, the shifting medical narratives from the CSK decision-makers crossed the line from tactical secrecy into public deception. Dhoni initially sat out due to a pre-season calf injury, which was supposed to sideline him for just a fortnight, before a secondary thigh muscle strain emerged. Later reports suggested he was fit but sat out to preserve team combinations. Yet, Dhoni did not travel with the squad for away fixtures. He only surfaced at Chepauk for the final home game to participate in a post-match lap of honour. Despite this, the management never explicitly ruled him out. Ironically, after CSK’s final game, Ruturaj said, “You will know next year,” when broadcaster Graeme Swann asked him the Dhoni question. "Then they said, 'no, no. He is still recovering from the injury'. And then they said he got injured in the thigh," Srikkanth said. "Stop this deception. You should make it clear. If he is not going to play the entire season, fair enough. Fans would have been mentally prepared had you made that clear." NOBODY IS MISSING DHONI: SRIKKANTH Srikkanth took direct aim at Gaikwad, Fleming, and batting coach Michael Hussey for keeping a false carrot dangled in front of an unsuspecting audience on a match-by-match basis. "If you ask them on a match-by-match basis, Ruturaj will say 'the big man will be available for the next game'. He kept repeating it. That is where the management, the captain and Stephen Fleming should have said it forthright: 'He is not playing this season, he is not fully fit'. Fans would have agreed and moved on." Crucially, the 1983 World Cup hero pointed out that the sport had naturally progressed, and the yellow army was mature enough to handle the reality of a post-Dhoni era if the management had simply chosen transparency over public relations tactics. "If you look at it honestly, nobody is missing Dhoni. Nobody is asking for Dhoni in the matches. I think people are asking why he is not in the dressing room, but how many are asking that he is not playing? The Dhoni era is over.
