तब राहुल गांधी ने आरोप लगाया था कि भाजपा और चुनाव आयोग के बीच मिलीभगत है। उन्होंने टिप्पणी की थी कि जितनी बड़ी चोरी, उतना बड़ा इनाम। अब भाजपा इसी पुराने बयान को आधार बनाकर कांग्रेस को घेर रही है।दूसरी ओर, गृह मंत्री रमेश चेन्निथला ने इस नियुक्ति का बचाव किया है। उन्होंने पत्रकारों से कहा कि सरकार के पास सक्षम अधिकारियों को महत्वपूर्ण प्रशासनिक पदों पर नियुक्त करने का पूरा अधिकार है। चेन्निथला के अनुसार, रतन केलकर को मुख्यमंत्री का सचिव बनाना सरकार का विशेषाधिकार है।
उन्होंने कहा कि केलकर एक काबिल अधिकारी हैं और इस नियुक्ति में कुछ भी असामान्य नहीं है। सरकार किसी भी अधिकारी को वापस बुलाने और नियुक्त करने की शक्ति रखती है।
