According to agency sources, the newly constructed mansion is spread across nearly two to three acres and was allegedly being built at a cost running into several crores of rupees. Investigators suspect that large amounts of alleged black money were routed through the construction of the luxury property. Sources claimed the residence was not an ordinary house but a massive estate that drew the attention of ED officials during the ongoing probe. The searches are part of the wider investigation connected to alleged financial irregularities and properties linked to the officer and his associates. Sources in the agency said investigators were “surprised" by the scale of wealth and the lavish nature of the under-construction mansion allegedly linked to the Kolkata Police officer. ED officials are currently examining financial documents, property records and other materials recovered during the searches. According to ED sources, “the game is not over yet," indicating that more revelations and action may follow in the case. Who is Santanu Sinha Biswas? Santanu Sinha Biswas is a senior official in the Kolkata Police who served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the Special Branch. He previously held high-profile positions, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Kalighat Police Station. On May 14, 2026, he was arrested by the ED after a grueling 11-hour interrogation, and his tenure was subsequently terminated by the Kolkata Police Commissioner on May 21, 2026. He is under the scanner and was arrested due to his alleged involvement in multiple multi-crore criminal networks and financial irregularities. The primary trigger for his arrest is his alleged collusion with a notorious criminal network run by Biswajit Podder (alias Sona Pappu) and a real estate businessman named Jay Kamdar. Biswas is accused of abusing his police position to protect and run an organized syndicate involved in fraud, extortion, and illegal land grabbing in south Kolkata. Digital data and WhatsApp chats leaked from Jay Kamdar’s devices revealed direct, highly suspicious financial transactions connecting Biswas to the illicit network, including an estimated ₹2.5 crore personal transaction. Biswas skipped five consecutive ED summons and went untraceable. This forced the agency to perform raids on his Ballygunge residence and issue a nationwide lookout circular across airports and border outposts to prevent him from fleeing India. Beyond the land-grabbing syndicate, Biswas is facing severe scrutiny on multiple other fronts. He allegedly used his immense administrative influence to manipulate the lucrative official postings of local police officers-in-charge. Following his arrest, fresh allegations emerged indicating heavy financial irregularities in funds belonging to the West Bengal Police Welfare Board, where he handled key responsibilities. The ED is investigating his auxiliary links to separate, wide-reaching sand smuggling rackets, illegal sand trafficking, and coal theft cases across West Bengal. Public allegations surface that he misused his proximity to top political establishment figures to unlawfully secure major administrative posts and lucrative contracts—such as the RG Kar Medical College canteen contract—for his immediate family members.
