News18 Dhurandhar 2: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to look into the allegations that Ranveer Singh-starrer ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, breached provisions of the Official Secrets Act by disclosing sensitive operational details related to the armed forces. While hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Deepak Kumar, a head constable with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in New Delhi, a division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia urged the ministry and the censor board to consider the petitioner’s representation and take an appropriate decision, Bar and Bench reported. In his PIL, Kumar alleged that the film revealed operational tactics of the Indian armed forces and details linked to defence operations, which could pose a threat to the country’s security and integrity. It further claimed that the movie disclosed information related to drugs being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The High Court remarked that the movie may be a work of fiction but the concerns raised by the petitioner cannot be said to be bereft of any material. “Even if the movie is a work of fiction and imagination and is made for entertainment purposes, the impact of the movie can’t be denied," the bench observed. The petitioner argued that certain scenes and characters in the movie appeared to closely resemble senior officials and deceased servicemen, making the depiction too explicit from a national security perspective. The High Court, however, did not pass any order stopping the film. Instead, it said the concerns raised by the petitioner should be examined appropriately by the concerned authorities. “The censor board should have some guidelines. We will only direct you to consider his representation and take an informed decision," it said. The bench disposed of the petition by directing the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the CBFC to treat the PIL as a formal representation and decide on the issues raised in it. The series has become one of India’s most popular action film franchises, with Ranveer Singh and director Aditya Dhar building a huge fan base around its spy-action story world. The film follows Intelligence Bureau Chief Ajay Sanyal, played by R Madhavan, as he leads a high-risk mission to dismantle a terrorist network operating in Pakistan. Ranveer Singh portrays a 20-year-old Punjabi youth who is recruited from prison and trained to infiltrate Karachi’s criminal underworld. It features a powerful ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sanjay Dutt. While the first film was a big hit in theatres, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge took the franchise to a much bigger level at the global box office. Reports said the sequel earned over Rs 1,700 crore worldwide, making it Ranveer Singh’s biggest film so far and one of the highest-grossing Indian movies ever. The film also reportedly earned more than several recent pan-India blockbusters in important overseas markets, strengthening the franchise’s strong box office success.
