Delhi reports five murders in 24 hours, minors among victims

Delhi, often regarded as the crime capital, has once again reported a spate of violent incidents. The national capital on Wednesday witnessed five deaths in violent incidents within a span of 24 hours, including the double murder of two minors in Rohini and two other fatal cases reported from different parts of the capital, prompting police investigations. Read Full Story TWO MINORS STABBED TO DEATH In the first incident in Delhi’s Rohini, a 22-year-old man was found dead at a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre in Aman Vihar area. The deceased, a resident of Sultanpuri, was reportedly discovered after information was shared with his family by individuals associated with the centre around 6 am, according to a police source. Following the alert, police reached the spot and initiated an enquiry into the incident. Statements of the family members as well as the staff of the rehabilitation centre are being recorded as part of the investigation. The body has been sent to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Mangolpuri for post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death. Sources said CCTV footage from the premises and surrounding areas has been examined, and no evidence of foul play has emerged so far. However, officials added that the investigation is ongoing and all possible angles are being considered. BROTHER OF JAILED ACCUSED SHOT DEAD In a second incident in northeast Delhi, a 22-year-old man, identified as Amanullah Qureshi, was shot dead near Shyam Lal College in northeast Delhi during the intervening night of May 19 and 20. Police suspect the killing to be linked to personal enmity and an ongoing rivalry involving his family. According to police, Amanullah had stepped out to get petrol when unidentified assailants opened fire on him, hitting him in the head and stomach. He was taken to GTB Hospital by his family, where doctors declared him brought dead. The deceased’s father, Mohammad Taslim, said the family initially thought Amanullah had met with a road accident. "I do not know much about the incident. I only came to know that my son had met with an accident. I was repeatedly calling my son's number, which was finally answered by a person who took him to the hospital. He asked me to reach the GTB Hospital quickly," Taslim said. "When I reached here, the doctors declared him dead. After seeing his condition, I asked them to examine him properly. When they checked carefully, they found that my son had been shot. One bullet hit his head, while another hit his stomach," he added. The killing comes months after the victim’s brother, Mohammad Moin Qureshi, was arrested by Delhi Police's Special Cell following an encounter in the Timarpur area in January. UNCLE-NEPHEW DISPUTE TURNS FATAL In another incident from Delhi’s Subhash Place, a violent altercation between an uncle and his nephew turned fatal. The nephew sustained multiple stab injuries and is currently in critical condition in hospital. The uncle also died during the altercation. Police have registered a murder case and launched an investigation. DELHI TOPS METRO CITIES IN CRIME Delhi, often regarded as a crime-prone metropolis, continues to report a high volume of criminal cases. The national capital recorded over 2.75 lakh criminal cases in 2024, according to the latest Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. The national capital recorded the highest number of cases among India’s 19 metropolitan cities, defined as urban areas with populations exceeding 20 lakh. As per the NCRB report, Delhi accounted for 2,75,402 cases in 2024, compared to 3,23,549 cases in 2023 and 2,98,988 cases in 2022. The capital contributed 4.67 per cent of the total 58.85 lakh criminal cases reported nationwide in 2024. Ends
