Rapid Read News18 Twisha Sharma’s friends, the 33-year-old woman who died within five months of marrying lawyer Samarth Singh, have alleged that she was frequently humiliated by her husband in front of relatives and friends. Twisha was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. Speaking to NDTV, her friends Navratan, Prerna and Purshottam claimed Samarth often insulted Twisha publicly and referred to her as a “gawar". “He used to say she (Twisha) does not know anything, what has she studied, she does not know anything, nor does she do anything. He always humiliated her during gatherings with friends," they said. According to them, Twisha’s behaviour had changed significantly by the time of her brother’s wedding earlier this year. “She remained very quiet. After two to three months of marriage, she was under immense pressure from her in-laws," they said. They claimed that Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh, repeatedly questioned her about the pregnancy and asked who the father of the child was. Giribala Singh is also a co-accused in the case. “As far as abortion is concerned, it was an unplanned pregnancy," they said. Recalling the wedding, Twisha’s friends said Samarth had promised to care for her after marriage as she was moving to another city. “On one hand, he made such promises, and on the other, he did such things," they said. They further alleged that Twisha’s parents had booked tickets to Madhya Pradesh to bring her back home, but later cancelled the plan after Giribala Singh allegedly warned that Twisha would not be allowed to return if she left the house. Another close friend, Prachi, told NDTV that Twisha maintained two phones, one for work and another for personal use. She alleged that after Twisha’s death, her in-laws tried to keep the personal phone away from her family. MP Govt Seeks CBI Probe The Madhya Pradesh government has written to the Central Bureau of Investigation seeking a probe into the Twisha Sharma case. The development comes ahead of the hearing in the matter before the Jabalpur High Court on Friday. According to officials, the state government will support the victim’s family during the proceedings. The Madhya Pradesh Advocate General is scheduled to appear in court on behalf of the state government. The Solicitor General, representing the Central Government, will also appear in the case. ‘Trapped’ Twisha met Samarth through a dating app in 2024, and the two married in December 2025. Her death on May 12 led to allegations from her parents that she had been subjected to physical abuse, mental torture and dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. WhatsApp chats between Twisha and her mother, Rekha Sharma, allegedly showed that she felt “trapped" in an unhappy marriage. In response to the allegations, Twisha’s Mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired judge, claimed that Twisha was undergoing psychiatric treatment and was addicted to drugs, alleging that she showed withdrawal symptoms when she did not receive them. Police, however, said they had found no evidence supporting those allegations. Twisha’s family has maintained that she was a cheerful person whose health deteriorated after marriage due to sustained mental harassment. While Giribala Singh has received anticipatory bail from a sessions court, Samarth Singh was denied relief and remains absconding. Bhopal police have announced a reward of Rs 30,000 for information leading to his arrest.
