The Mysuru unit of the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and the Public Library Readers’ Forum have urged T.S. Srivatsava, Krishnaraja MLA, to take the necessary steps to keep the Kuvempunagar Public Library open on holidays. In its memorandum submitted to the MLA on Thursday, the AIDYO and Public Library Readers’ Forum have also emphasised the need to provide basic infrastructure to the library.
“Every day, hundreds of people, including students and senior citizens, visit the library for reading. Among them, a large number are job aspirants. Due to multiple holidays such as Mondays, second Tuesdays, fourth Saturdays, and government holidays, public libraries remain closed frequently,” the memorandum said. “As a result, job aspirants are forced to spend thousands of rupees every month to study in private libraries.
This becomes a financial burden for students seeking employment. Therefore, keeping public libraries open even on holidays would be very helpful,” the memorandum said. Even though drinking water facilities have now been arranged at Kuvempunagar Public Library as earlier requested, the memorandum said the old tables and chairs, which are difficult to use, should be replaced, and that the toilets should be cleaned regularly.
The surroundings should be maintained without the overgrowth of plants and bushes. Further, stone benches should be arranged outside for sitting and having meals, the memorandum said.
