Leaders of the A.P. Municipal Workers’ Union, affiliated with the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) demanded that the State government provide jobs to the kin of retired and deceased sanitation workers on compassionate grounds. Addressing the gathering at the Dharna Chowk in Vijayawada, the Union’s State general Secretary P. Subbarayudu warned that there would be a State-wide strike if the government did not provide jobs under this category.
He claimed that municipal corporations and nagar panchayats in the State are facing a staff crunch. “Municipal engineering workers frequently suffer from health problems as they work in unhygienic conditions, and the government has not taken any measures to reduce the workload or to address the problem of staff shortage,” he said. They do not even have job security, and have no week offs, he said, adding that while HRD Minister Nara Lokesh repeatedly assured outsourced workers that welfare schemes would be extended to them, nothing has been done so far.
The leader also opposed the government’s proposal to privatise municipal services, calling it detrimental to public interest. The leaders demanded the immediate release of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears, leave encashment, and gratuity benefits for permanent municipal workers. A tense situation prevailed as some of the workers tried to visit the office of the Commissiomer and Director of the Municipal Administration.
They calmed down after Commissioner Sampath Kumar assured them that their demands would be addressed.
