Rapid Read Air India Once Paid A World-Famous Artist With A Baby Elephant, Find Out Why An unruly Air India passenger was handed over to security personnel at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport after he allegedly smashed the inner pane of an aircraft window during the Chandigarh-New Delhi flight. The passenger has been referred to the airline’s internal committee, which will decide whether he should be formally classified as an “unruly passenger" and placed on the no-fly list. The incident occurred on flight AI1879 on June 7 as the aircraft was preparing to land in the national capital, officials familiar with the matter said.
The passenger allegedly ignored repeated verbal and written warnings from the cabin crew before damaging the window pane. “The passenger broke the inner glass pane of a window despite being given several verbal and written warnings by the crew," an official said. The cockpit crew followed standard operating procedure, alerted security agencies before landing and, after the landing, handed the passenger over to airport security personnel. Confirming the incident, an Air India spokesperson said the flight landed safely and that “safety of passengers, crew and the aircraft was never compromised at any point during the flight." The airline said the matter has been reported to the aviation regulator and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for behaviour that can affect safety and security on board. An airport official said the passenger had been “aggressive and dismissive of repeated warnings" from the crew, but began apologising repeatedly after being handed over to security personnel.
The official identified him as a resident of Patna. Officials also said the passenger briefly attempted to escape while being escorted by Delhi Police at Terminal 3 on Monday morning. A CISF quick response team apprehended him within minutes and returned him to police custody, a second airport official said on condition of anonymity. During the inquiry, the passenger’s parents informed police that he had mental health issues and requested that he be allowed to travel to Patna. Under the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR), 2017, such cases are examined by an airline’s internal committee, which has up to 30 days to determine the category of the offence and the duration of any flying ban. Airlines may impose a temporary ban of up to 30 days while the review is pending.
