Saudi Arabia's King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has come under attack again, raising concerns over aviation security and escalating regional tensions. The Houthis have not confirmed responsibility for Saturday's attack, but the group has threatened to target Saudi airports, excluding Medina, in retaliation for strikes on Yemen's Sanaa International Airport.
Nawaf Obaid, senior research fellow at King's College London and security and intelligence analyst, says attacks on airports and energy infrastructure are part of a strategy to project instability in Saudi Arabia and pressure the kingdom amid the ongoing conflict. He argues that Saudi-led coalition strikes have significantly weakened Houthi military capabilities, while US intelligence and targeting assistance are already supporting Saudi operations.
Al Jazeera's Youssef Mawry reports from Sanaa that the Houthis have warned commercial airlines to avoid Saudi airports and have threatened to intensify attacks under their stated strategy of "airport for airport, blockade for blockade, and capital for capital." The escalating conflict is disrupting flights, public events and economic activities in Saudi Arabia, raising questions about the sustainability of the military campaign and the risk of further regional escalation.
