(Reuters) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the ties between India and the United States, describing them as the cornerstone of Washington’s approach towards the Indo-Pacific. He also shared that India and the US had expanded cooperation in several areas, including trade and defence. Speaking at the US Embassy Support Annex Building dedication ceremony in Delhi, Rubio said, “We’ve expanded commercial ties with more than $20 billion in investments from Indian companies in the United States. We’ve deepened a security partnership through military exercises in the Indo-Pacific." He also praised the personal relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, saying they were focused on the long term.

It’s the reason why I’m here on this visit to reaffirm those ties, to build upon them. We think in the months ahead, we’re going to have even more exciting and new announcements to make about the development and the strengthening of the relationship between the two countries." America First Visa Schedule The top US diplomat also revealed an America First visa schedule that would prioritise business professionals to strengthen ties with India. “The facility is not just for those who are applying for visas. It’s also for you, the Americans who work here, the men and women of this mission, who are at the front lines every single day of advancing America’s national interest and America’s national security," he added.

On the new US embassy building, Rubio emphasised that it was “more than just brick and mortar" and said it was helping save American money and making the US more efficient. He also said it was a symbol of India’s important role in the US approach towards the Indo-Pacific. Quad Meeting Rubio also said his first meeting as US Secretary of State was to attend a Quad meeting. “We are going to renew that. We wanted to do it here, not just because of our commitment to that structure of work, but also as a tangible sign of what an important role India plays in the United States and in our posture and in our approach to the Indo-Pacific." His remarks came ahead of the crucial Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for May 26 in Delhi. Escorted by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, Rubio arrived in the national capital following a politically significant morning stop in Kolkata.
