US midterms 2026: Trump faces pressure as Latino support slips

With four weeks to go before the US midterm elections, President Donald Trump is stepping up campaigning for Republicans as the party faces competitive Senate races and signs of weakening support among Latino voters. Trump has been campaigning in traditionally Republican states, while Vice President JD Vance has also been deployed to support candidates in Alaska.
In Maine, Republican Senator Susan Collins faces Democrat Troy Jackson in a closely watched race, while Michigan's Senate contest between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is shaping up as another key test for control of the Senate. Democrats are also campaigning around economic concerns, healthcare and the impact of the war in Iran.
A new NBC News/Telemundo poll shows Latino voters now favour Democrats over Republicans by 59 percent to 35 percent on which party should control Congress, reversing some of the gains Trump made with the group in 2024. Al Jazeera’s John Hendren says the shift is being driven largely by concerns over the economy and cost of living, as well as opposition to Trump's immigration policies.
