CITU organises ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ in Kerala against Union government’s policies

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) State president T.P. Ramakrishnan inaugurated the trade union’s ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ in front of the General Post Office (GPO) in the capital on Monday (August 10, 2026). The protest was in response to a nationwide call issued by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Central Trade Unions (CTU) against the “anti-worker and anti-farmer policies” of the Union government.

The demands of the protest include the repeal of the four Labour Codes implemented by the Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, legal guarantee for minimum support price for agricultural produce as per the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill, increase of minimum wage to ₹42,000 per month including Dearness Allowance in all sectors, and withdrawal of the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB-GRAM(G)] scheme as well as free trade agreements.

Across State Protests were witnessed across district centres in the State on Monday. Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] central committee member E.P. Jayarajan and CITU general secretary Elamaram Kareem inaugurated the protest in Kannur and Kozhikode,

respectively. At Ernakulam, Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) leader Thampan Thomas led the protest. The ‘Jail Bharo’ campaign is a precursor to intense nationwide protests, starting in November, planned by the SKM and CTU against the Union government’s policies.
