(Photo: Reuters) US President Donald Trump has said Washington is “low-keying" its engagement with Iran, indicating that the United States is currently taking a more measured approach while watching the country’s worsening economic situation. “We are low-keying it," Trump said during a brief phone interview with Axios on Sunday. Trump also described the current state of engagement with Tehran as only partial negotiations. “We are only semi-negotiating with them. We are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money," he told Axios. TRUMP SAYS IRAN IS ‘IN VERY BAD SHAPE’ Trump said Iran was “in very bad shape" economically and claimed Tehran did not have enough money to pay its troops. According to Axios, Trump also said the US naval blockade had worsened Iran’s economic crisis. His comments suggest Washington is allowing economic pressure on Tehran to build rather than immediately moving towards another major military offensive. Axios reported that just a week earlier, Trump had been on the verge of ordering a return to major combat operations. In his latest remarks, however, he did not issue any new military threats.
