(Representational Image) Four masked men allegedly entered the house of a senior advocate in Thanesar, held him and his wife at gunpoint, and looted cash, jewellery and other valuables worth about Rs 3.15 crore. According to a complaint filed at Thanesar City police station, the incident took place on Thursday evening. The police informed media about the incident on Friday.
Senior advocate Balwant Singh Walia said he stepped out around 9.30 PM to walk his dog. When he returned at about 10 PM, he found his house ransacked. He saw his wife lying face down on a bed. Her hands and feet were tied with rope and her mouth sealed with tape. Walia said four masked men were inside the house. They overpowered him, tied him up, and assaulted the elderly couple while holding them at gunpoint. The accused demanded cash and valuables. They threatened to shoot the couple if they refused to cooperate with them The robbers told the couple they were behind a Rs 50 lakh burglary at the same house on March 20. They said they had failed to open the digital safes at that time and now wanted Walia to unlock them. Fearing for their lives, Walia handed over the keys and opened two digital lockers.
The accused fled with Rs 17–20 lakh in cash, 1.5–2 kg of gold jewellery, around 4 kg of silver items, utensils, idols, a licensed revolver and cartridges. Before leaving, the assailants damaged four CCTV cameras and took away the DVR. Walia said they also demanded another Rs 80 lakh, warned they would return, and threatened to kill the couple if they informed the police. The accused locked the main door from outside and escaped. Neighbours rushed in after hearing the alarm and freed the couple before alerting police. Police and forensic teams later visited the spot. A case has been registered against unidentified persons under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for robbery, criminal intimidation and other offences, along with sections of the Arms Act. Station House Officer Devender Singh said teams from the Crime Investigation Agency and local police are probing the case and scanning CCTV footage across the city to trace the suspects.
